House Lannister of Riverrun is one of the Great Houses of Westeros, one of its richest and most powerful families and oldest dynasties. It is also the current royal house of the Seven Kingdoms.
The Lannisters rule as Lord Paramount over the Riverlands, and the Royal Family over the Seven Kingdoms. Their seat is Riverrun, a large castle located in the central-western part of the Riverlands. It sits at the point where the Red Fork of the Trident River is joined by its major tributary, the Tumblestone River flowing out of the west. In times of danger, sluice gates can be opened to flood a channel cut to the west of the castle, turning Riverrun into an island. Its walls rise sheer from the waters and its towers command the opposite shores, making assaulting it almost impossible without huge casualties.
House Lannister's Heraldry consists of a golden lion on a crimson background, and their House words are "Hear me roar!". Their unofficial motto, which is as well known as the official one, is "A Lannister always pays his debts".
They possess a Valyrian steel sword called Brightroar, which is currently held by Lord Markas.
Fair-haired, tall and handsome, the Lannisters are the blood of Andal adventurers who carved out a mighty kingdom in the hills and valleys. Through the female line, they boast of descent from Lann the Clever, the legendary trickster of the Age of Heroes who swindled Riverrun from its previous rulers. They used to rule the Riverlands as the Kings of the Trident before they decided to invade and annex the rest of Westeros. Due to their strength at arms and efficient military stratergies, in only took a short period of time before six of the seven formerly independent kingdoms had surrendered to the Lannister leader, King Tytos I, unifying the continent under his rule.
As the new self-proclaimed King of the Seven Kingdsom, Tytos Lannister, and the newly styled Lord Paramount of the Reach, Mern Greyjoy, joined forces and fielded 60,000 men against Lord Aegon Targaryen of Dorne. They defeated the last Kingdom of Dorne in a battle that came to be known as the 'Field of Fire' and lost 4,000 men. As an act of retribution, the King stripped the Targaryen's of their lands and titles and gave them to a, at the time, minor House, named Baratheon. The Baratheon's have since served the Lannisters as the Lords Paramount of Dorne and Wardens of the South.
After the recent passing of King Tytos due to a combination of old-age and ill-health, his heir, Lord Markas, has just been coronated as the new King of the Seven Kingdoms. As things stand, the King is a widower without an heir.
